This classic American tale is set in the 1930s in Catfish Row, a neighborhood in Charleston, South Carolina. Bess, beautiful and troubled, turns to Porgy, the crippled beggar in search of safety after her possessive lover Crown commits murder. As Porgy and Bess’s love grows, their future is threatened by Crown and the conniving Sporting Life. Single tickets for the run are available from 7/12/11.

"... The imposing Phillip Boykin provides the production's most operatic singing as Crown, and David Alan Grier is a stylish, slinky Sporting Life, dangling his uptown lure and "happy dust." But it is McDonald, conveying not just with her magnificent pipes but in expression and gesture great and small the difficulty of Bess's trek toward an outward decency to match her inner, that kicks this Porgy from melodrama to sublimity. In his curmudgeonly prejudgment, Sondheim called her voice "one of the glories of the American theater." Well, he got that right."

George Gershwin, its composer, was intrigued by the mix of pathos and humor in the source material - DuBose Heyward’s 1927 play "Porgy," which led him to collaborate with Heyward, Heyward’s wife Dorothy and his brother Ira. What they created is a work that melds the sinewy texture of grand opera with Broadway-styled pizzazz."
