"...From the opening scene of "West Side Story" - chaotic and cacophonic- to the final image of Maria (Eevie Perez) kneeling alone in mourning onstage, we feel the heat and tension of New York, with its rival gangs, prejudice, and libido. No matter how many times I've seen this show, the music, choreography and storyline, based on Romeo and Juliet, never fail to hold my attention, with each director's vision capturing something slightly different. Bertone's version is no exception."

"...Having seen the classic musical West Side Story from the stage to the 1961 film adaptation to Spielberg’s recent Oscar worthy film, Reagle Music Theatre’s Blake Du Bois as Tony’s moving rendition of the classic song, Maria is a must see. Many Tonys have floated through this number with surprise, naiveté, and the excitement of attraction while blinded by love, but Du Bois’s delivery evokes a more meaningful perspective. Enhanced by his extensive vocal range, this soulful rendition depicts not naiveté, not necessarily blindness, but an overwhelming feeling of love for Maria and the fear of what that means. So overcome by love that he must move forward in spite of it. It was like understanding Maria anew."

"...One of the keys to making this West Side Story especially strong is the attention paid to diversity in casting. It seems like a no-brainer for a show about warring factions of immigrants, but it has not always been honored. This group, the majority of whom are current or former students of The Boston Conservatory, is young, diverse, and loaded with talent. The dancers electrify Bertone's choreography, and the singers are melodic and intense."
