And indeed that is where the show was originally staged in 2019, at the New York Theatre Workshop. Performances were slated to begin on Broadway in March 2020, but then the pandemic hit. The "Sing Street" creative team used the downtime to make a few tweaks to the musical. The producers are hoping the Boston production leads to a Broadway run."

Either way, in the show, friendships form, confidence is cultivated, and love develops. The lyrics and music the teens create together bond them and inspire others to dream, despite the suffering that persists. Carter's Raphina, whose vocals soar on her second solo, has survived trauma, Finn's Brendan has lost his way, and there's a dash of toxic masculinity to grapple with. But "Sing Street," with its crackling possibility and revelry, pushes its characters and audiences to sing and dance through it all."

It’s a coming of age story set in 1980’s Dublin about a teenage boy who falls for a beautiful mysterious girl who calls herself a “model.” So he claims to have a band and then has to start one to win her heart. Yes, we’ve heard it all before. The success of this material lies in the casting and execution. The film has real heart, derived from real locations, upbeat musical numbers, and a sensitive performance by a younger lead actor."

The new Sing Street has the same bones as Taichman's NYTW work but is more coherent, more energetic, and far richer with emotion. If it still stumbles at points, hampered by awkward plotting that Walsh's book still can't seem to shake, this Sing Street is nonetheless cathartic, joyous, and, best of all, really, really sad."
