Merrimack Repertory Theatre presents Red

Red in BostonWhen painter Mark Rothko is presented with an opportunity to work on larger murals, he hires a young assistant who ends up challenging the master's fervently held artistic beliefs. "Red", written by John Logan and directed by Charles Towers is a fiery and fiercely funny Tony Award-winner for Best Play. "Red" runs at Merrimack Repertory Theatre (MRT) from February 14-March 10. Tickets start at $20 and are on sale now thru MRT.org or by calling 978-654-4678.

"Red" features Mark Zeisler as painter Mark Rothko and Ryan Barry as his assistant Ken. Mark Zeisler returns to MRT after previously appearing in "A Picasso," "The Seafarer", "Tranced," and "The Homecoming." Ryan Barry will be making his MRT debut. MRT's Artistic Director Charles Towers helms the production, and his notable recent credits include MRT's productions of "Beat Generation," "Ghost-Writer," "Four Places" and "The Seafarer." The creative team for "Red" includes Bill Clarke (Scenic Designer), Deb Newhall (Costumer Designer), Kevin Frazier (Lighting Designer) and Jason Weber (Sound Designer).

On directing "Red" at MRT Charles Towers said, "There's a good reason that John Logan's "Red" won the 2010 Tony Award for Best Play and then went on to become the most produced play in America. It's a terrific drama shot through with great humor. Even though the American painter Mark Rothko is one of two characters in the play, this is not a biography. The father-son relationship that develops between Rothko and his assistant Ken has all the power and muscle of generational conflict which makes for a riveting evening of theatre."

For his work on "Red", playwright John Logan received the Tony, Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle and Drama League Awards. Mr. Logan is also the author of more than a dozen other plays including "Never the Sinner," "Hauptmann" and "Speaking in Tongues." His work as a screenwriter includes the current or upcoming films "Hugo" and "Coriolanus," as well as such well-known films as "Sweeney Todd"(Golden Globe Award), "The Aviator"(Oscar, Golden Globe, and WGA nominations), "Gladiator"(Oscar, Golden Globe and WGA nominations),"The Last Samurai," "Any Given Sunday," and "RKO 281". Mr. Logan has also collaborated on the script for the latest James Bond film, "Skyfall.
