Lizard Boy: A New Musical
The Boston Globe - Somewhat Recommended
"...If you experience life's traumas and troubles through the generational filter of commercial superhero culture; if your idea of peak musical theater is a songbook that starts with the knobs cranked to 11 and amps up from there; if the stage is for you an arena of therapeutic self-healing rather than narrative engagement - then you are likely very young and "Lizard Boy" is for you. I do not say this cynically; theater kids of all ages are hereby welcome to the SpeakEasy Stage production of Justin Huertas's heartfelt Rorschach blot of alienation and belonging. Theatergoers seeking a drama of adult concerns and professional staging should probably avoid."
Stage and Cinema - Somewhat Recommended
"...I generally count on SpeakEasy Stage for stellar productions of innovative and ground-breaking plays and musicals. But that history, along with fine performances and charming musicianship from Keiji Ishiguri as Lizard Boy Trevor, Peter DiMaggio as his friend Cary, and Chelsie Nectow as Siren are not enough to rescue this production from Justin Huerta's weak script. Even director Lyndsay Allyn Cox's considerable directorial skills and Zoe Sundra's appealingly bright costumes fail to keep this indie rock musical dragon tale from dragging."
METR Mag - Recommended
"...As directed by Lyndsay Allyn Cox, with music direction by Violet Wang, in the comic-book stylized "LIZARD BOY," we are introduced to Trevor (Keiji Ishiguri), an anxious young man beset by his own self- consciousness brought about by his noticeable green scaly complexion."
On Boston Stages - Highly Recommended
"..."Lizard Boy" is a wildly original, witty and clever work. As Kermit the Frog and The Incredible Hulk often reminded us, being green ain't easy, and that goes double if you're a young, gay, insecure young man who hides from the world because of the greenish shade of his skin. Bit by bit, we learn that Trevor was an elementary school student who found himself in the middle of an infamous dragon attack, leaving him covered with dragon blood that turned into lizard scales."
