A Case For The Existence of God Reviews

"...In the hands of director Melinda Lopez, a local treasure as an actor, playwright, and educator, "A Case for the Existence of God" slowly but surely transcends the mundanity of the office space and the incidental meeting of these two men. They grow to appreciate each other's company, sharing a bottle of whiskey at Keith's place while listening to the baby monitor. Later, they sit shoulder to shoulder on a bench at a playground, gazing past the audience as they watch their daughters play together, scrambling to take a picture when they see the girls holding hands."

"...If that title doesn't grab you in these grey days of existential crisis, global conflict, divisive politics, economic uncertainty, and a myriad other things-maybe my review will. SpeakEasy Stage's production of A CASE FOR THE EXISTENCE OF GOD starts humbly and quietly as one man approaches another seeking a bank loan. What starts as a business meeting grows into a moving relationship rooted in shared humanity and the binding universal truths that lie beneath our superficial differences. This superbly-acted and written two-hander by Samuel D. Hunter and directed by multi-talented Elliot Norton Prize winner Melinda Lopez, captured me in its first silent moments and held me fast, clutching at my heart, until the last of its 90 minutes."

"...Toward the end of A Case for the Existence of God (named Best Play of the 21-22 Season by the New York Drama Critics' Circle), I tried to recall what I had learned in grad school about Aristotle and his theory of catharsis. Full disclosure: I had to look it up, because my memory is hazy. Here it is in an imperfect nutshell: according to Aristotle, a tragedy causes the purgation (or catharsis) of pity and fear that leads to a purification."

"...A play that is a cause for celebration. Huzzahs for Samuel D. Hunter's A Case for the Existence of God - a two-hander with a 90-minute running time - which is being given a stellar production at Speakeasy Stage under Melinda Lopez's feisty and insightful direction."

"...The play's ending (no spoilers!) solidifies and elevates Hunter's theme that the key to happiness and the point of God's creating more than one human lies in the plan that they would find comfort and meaning in their relationships with one another. We need each other. What links us is what it's all about. What separates us is a red herring meant to be overcome and ultimately ignored."

"...A Case for the Existence of God is for men. Anyone can watch it and appreciate it, but the people who need to see it the most are men. The solution to loneliness is connection. Keith and Ryan learn from their friendship about themselves and each other. Making friends as an adult is difficult, but it can be done."
