Dickens' holiday classic A Christmas Carol returns to Trinity Rep this year with artistic director Curt Columbus at the helm. Now a Rhode Island family tradition, watch as Ebenezer Scrooge -- a greedy, sour businessman infamous for his lack of Christmas cheer -- is visited by three ghosts and given the chance to examine his coldhearted ways. Share this joyous holiday favorite with the whole gang at Chace Theater.

Experience the magic of a holiday tradition as Josť Mateo Ballet Theatre brings its beloved production of Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker to the Strand Theatre for its 10th season. Get swept up in the fantastical story of Clara, who dreams that her toy nutcracker comes to life and takes her on an adventure to the Land of Sweets. Together they battle the evil Mouse King and dance with the Sugar Plum Fairy. Langston Hughes' Black Nativity -- a joyous account of the nativity told through scripture, verse, music and dance -- is a true Christmastime tradition, and National Center of Afro-American Artists' captivating production is the longest-running performance of the Harlem Renaissance poet's song-play in the world. First performed in 1961, Black Nativity is a retelling of the Christmas story from an Afro-centric perspective, and mixes text from the Gospel of Saint Luke with black vernacular. A cast of children and adults brings this timeless story to life with music and dancing in this uplifting production for the whole family. Experience this Boston tradition at Paramount Center.

A Christmas Celtic Sojourn Dec 9 - Dec 21, 2016  
Cutler Majestic Theatre A Christmas Celtic Sojourn
Experience an enchanting night of Celtic music and dance in honor of the holiday season at Brian O'Donovan's annual A Christmas Celtic Sojourn at Cutler Majestic Theatre. This year's 13th annual show promises to be as spectacular as ever, with American Irish music pioneers Solas, the extraordinary Nordic Fiddlers Bloc and the return of harpist-singer Maeve Gilchrist and cellist Natalie Haas. Also set to appear is Dervish lead woman Cathy Jordan, who has one of the purest traditional voices today, as well as dance director Cara Butler, who recently choreographed A Celtic Sojourn at The Boston Pops, award-winning English stepdancer Declan McHale and the young dancers from the Harney Academy of Irish Dance in Walpole. O'Donovan, the host of WGBH's national radio program, has been at the helm of this live show since 2003, and he promises some surprises for this latest version as well.

Back in 1963, the legendary star of stage and screen Judy Garland starred in a now-iconic Christmas special on CBS. Today tribute artist Peter Mac steps into Garland's high heels in a salute to this beloved TV event. Mac, a self-described "male actress" who's portrayed the late, great actress to audiences and critical acclaim for more than a decade, is known for his seriously fun and loving tributes to Garland. Famed for bringing a nuanced glimpse into Garland's complex personality and inner life, Mac was awarded a Golden Halo Award by Garland's co-stars Mickey Rooney and Margaret O'Brien for his stunningly accurate portrayal. But his tribute talents don't stop with Judy: For this festive yuletide show, "guests" are set to include uncanny approximations of Liza Minnelli, Bea Arthur and Ethel Merman.

Returning to the Theatre District after more than 10 years and boasting all-new sets and costumes, Josť Mateo Ballet Theatre's production of The Nutcracker at Boston's Cutler Majestic is poised to bring back cherished memories, as well as to introduce a new generation to this magical production. This beloved holiday dance, set to Tchaikovsky's masterful score, tells the story of a young girl who receives a nutcracker as a Christmas Eve gift and who dreams of an enchanted adventure full of excitement, romance and plenty of Sugar Plum Fairies.

The Return of the Winemaker Dec 1 - Dec 23, 2016

This raucous holiday comedy asks a bold question: What if, instead of Bethlehem, Jesus was born in ... Ireland? In Return of the Winemaker, the residents of Ballygoura, County Galway are overjoyed when they discover that the messiah in their midst has the power to turn water into wine. The townsfolk convince Jesus to give up carpentry so he can concentrate on making more and more hooch for the local pubs to sell, until their plan hits a snag -- Jesus' father wants his son to return to heaven. With the town's booze supply at stake, the people of Ballygoura must convince God to let Jesus stay with them in this irreverent Irish Christmas play. Tir Na Theatre's Return of the Winemaker returns to The Rockwell in Somerville for its annual visit, after a run at the Cork Arts Theatre in Ireland.

A holiday hit around the country for over a decade now, The Santaland Diaries comes to the Rogers Center, bringing with it all the laughter you'll need to take the edge off your seasonal stresses. Written by best-selling humor writer David Sedaris, it's the story of Crumpet the Elf's adventures at Macy's and his wonderfully twisted take on shopping mall Santalands and the hired hands who populate them. Adapted for the stage by Tony-winning director-actor Joe Mantello (Wicked), this hilariously cynical solo show offers the perfect antidote to cloying holiday cheer.



Urban Nutcracker Dec 16 - Dec 31, 2016

Combining ballet, swing, flamenco, hip-hop, step and urban tap along with Tchaikovsky's classic score and Duke Ellington's signature swing, Tony Williams' Urban Nutcracker features a multicultural cast of talented dancers in this contemporary retelling of the classic fairy tale. Now in its 16th year, the production remains fresh with updated choreography, new costumes and surprise guest stars. Instead of the traditional children's roles "Clara" and "Fritz," though, this version of the story presented at Boston's Back Bay Events Center features the characters Clarice and Omar, whose roles are shared by talented local kids ages 9 through 13.
