The Unbleached American

The Unbleached American

Stoneham Theatre
395 Main Street Stoneham

Starring Johnny Lee Davenport (The Fugitive), The Unbleached American is based on the true story of Ernest Hogan. Dubbed the "father of ragtime" and the first African-American to perform on Broadway, Hogan enjoyed legions of fans and considerable wealth in his life. However, he also wrote many songs considered offensive to his own race. As Hogan looks back on his career he struggles with both his mortality and the legacy he leaves behind. While this is mainly a historical drama, The Unbleached American still raises relevant questions about today's society and the way prejudices continue.
