This highly imaginative take on The Merchant of Venice sets Shakespeare's brilliant drama against the background of Prohibition-era New Orleans. While grounded to Shakespeare's richly poetic text, Zero Point Theater's thrilling new adaptation takes liberties with the source material, casting Shylock as a black woman who owns a speakeasy jazz club, struggling to keep her business afloat against her white Christian competitors and haunted by the compromises she's had to make to get where she is. Zero Point Theater's production entertains as it challenges preconceived notions on gender, race, religion, sexual orientation and personal identity.
