Citizens of the Empire: A Space Opera

Boston Public Works Theater Company will present Citizens of the Empire by Kevin Mullins as its second show of its second season. The full-length play will open on January 8, 2016 and continue through to January 23, 2016 at the Calderwood Pavilion at the BCA (539 Tremont Street, South End, Boston, MA). Tickets from $15-$25 are on sale through BostonTheatreScene.com (617-933-8600) or BostonPublicWorks.org About the play Eight hundred years in the future, nobleman-turned-revolutionary Marcus Kent must risk everything to assure the freedom of his people. Joined in his fight by a union-organizing robot, an interstellar garbagewoman, and the madam of a space brothel, Marcus is driven to arms against those he once considered his friends in the Imperial court. In Citizens of the Empire, the fates of billions hangs in the balance as idealism and despotism clash in a struggle of galactic proportions. About the Playwright Kevin Mullins is a playwright and theatre artist from Boston. His play A Southern Victory was a finalist for the Eugene O'Neill National Playwrights Conference, a semi-finalist for the WordBRIDGE Playwrights Lab, and a finalist at PlayPenn. His plays have been presented or developed with Slant of Light Theatre, Flat Earth Theatre, Vagabond Theatre Group, Mill 6 Productions, Wax Wings Productions, Interim Writers, Fresh INK Theatre, and The International Anarchist Theatre Festival of Montreal. A devised piece he worked on, Blind Alley Guy, premiered at the Incubator Arts Project in NYC in June of 2011. He has participated in a Pataphysics workshop at The Flea and recently completed an MFA in dramatic writing from Carnegie Mellon University. About the Director Lindsay Eagle is a Boston-based director, actor, and producer. Past directing credits include From the Deep by Cassie M. Seinuk (BPW), Radium Girls, What Once We Felt and Rocket Man (Flat Earth Theatre), Eurydice (The Independent Drama Society), and short plays and readings with companies such as The Charlestown Working Theatre, The One-Minute Play Festival and Open Theatre Project. About the Genre Space Opera is a subgenre of science fiction that often emphasizes romantic, often melodramatic adventure, set mainly or entirely in outer space, usually involving conflict between opponents possessing advanced abilities, weapons, and other technology. Space Opera is not a musical genre. Boston Public Works Theater Company is a not-for-profit theater company founded in 2013 by two Boston playwrights who passionately feel that all playwrights should have an outlet for their voices and have control over the production of their work. The playwrights, in order of their productions are: John Greiner-Ferris (co-founder), Cassie M. Seinuk, Emily Kaye Lazzaro, Jess Foster, Kevin Mullins (co-founder), Jim Dalglish, and Laura Neubauer.
