Que es la vida? asks Pedro Calderon de la Barca's classic drama Life Is a Dream (La Vida es Sueño). The story follows Prince Segismundo, whose father has locked him in a tower to disprove a prophecy that his son will turn into an evil tyrant. The prince is forced into a life of extreme poverty, filth and discomfort, until he wakes in a castle, surrounded by luxuries and beauty. Which is real? Which is illusion? The play is among the finest examples of Spanish Golden Age drama and it gets a fresh revision in this new translation by Emerson Performing Arts Chair Melia Bensussen, performed by student production company Emerson Stage. Get swept away by the production that's become known as "The Spanish Hamlet" when it comes to the Jackie Liebergott Black Box Theatre in Boston.
