12 year old Clara triumphs over the Rat King. The victorious ending of a well known tale that is in essence whimsically wrenching and wholeheartedly heartfelt. When stripped away of all its usual 1950-ish Tchaikovsky tinsel, The Nutcracker, as imagined by The House Theatre of Chicago and adhering closely to E.T.A Hoffman’s dark original, is a riveting tale of a family in shock, with parents immobilized by the grief of losing their soldier son Fritz. A year ago, that unexpected knock on the door during a Christmas Eve party changed everything. And a year later, there are no plans for special Sugar Plum cookies, just the usual pizza bagels.

This season, join New Rep and arsenalARTS for A Christmas Story and witness the Parker family as they navigate through the calamities and joys of the holiday season.

Audiences are treated to a cornucopia of sights and sounds sung and danced by a cast of nearly 40 adults and 150 children from two dozen Greater Boston communities. Perennial favorites include the Parade of the Wooden Soldiers, performed by a bevy of precision tap dancers, and the inspirational Living Nativity. A sonorous choir of 40 adult carolers presents a Victorian Christmas, and the City Sidewalks come alive with popular classics accompanied by a hand bell choir. The young ballerina Clara dances to visions of sugar plums in the Teddy Bears’ Nutcracker, and 100 boys and girls from grades 1-4 are transformed into adorable elves in the colorful Santa’s Workshop.

Trinity Rep continues its new holiday tradition, one to complement our annual holiday gem, A Christmas Carol. Five actors create more than fifty memorable characters to bring to life Frank Capra’s beloved film. This unique stage adaptation is performed as a radio play, broadcast on Christmas Eve, 1949. Everyman George Bailey gets the chance to see what the world would be like if he’d never been born.

Back after winning Goldstar's 2009 Nutty Award, Boston Ballet's The Nutcracker is a time-honored magical journey through an enchanted winter wonderland, featuring Boston Ballet company dancers along with more than 250 children from Boston Ballet School and a live performance of the cherished Tchaikovsky score by Boston Ballet Orchestra. This will be the final production of the current Nutcracker. After 20 years, the current sets and costumes will be retired and The Nutcracker will return with new sets and costumes in 2012.

Sister’s Christmas Catechism, conceived by Maripat Donovan with Jane Morris and Marc Silvia, is the latest installment in the Late Nite Catechism series, a hilarious unconventional tutorial in Catholic holiday traditions. Sister’s Christmas Catechism is an opportunity to dive in and solve the real mysteries of the season. Perfect for those who need to know where the Magi’s gold is actually hidden. “Sister” Denise Fennell, Boston native now residing in Los Angeles, will conduct the proceedings and a local choir will not only be featured before the performance, but will then also be lured into her classroom for the nail biting start of the show.
