God Hates Musicals
855 Commonwealth Ave. Boston
Angered by the news that members of the hate-mongering Westboro Baptist Church had plans to protest the funerals of victims of violence, director and playwright Joe Creedon had the idea for God Hates Musicals. And the very thought of it immediately turned his grimace into a grin. Proof that laughter sometimes really is the best medicine, this parody aims to counteract the Westboro mantra of hatred with humor -- in a musical that is human, compassionate and (perhaps most importantly) funny. God Hates Musicals finds David Phelps beginning to question his hate-driven beliefs when an outsider joins the church with plans to save him. But with the ever-present rapture looming just around the corner, the stakes are certainly high. Featuring a cast filled with talented local actors, comedians and improvisers, God Hates Musicals aims to be both an entertaining show and a message of empathy masked in absurdity.
